The Center for Financial Inclusion at ACCION International and EDA Rural Systems organized Investment Readiness Trainings in February and March, 2010. These comprehensive and interactive three-day courses for South Asian MFIs were structured for MFIs looking to access international equity and local debt capital and ultimately broaden their capital base.

The courses were taught by microfinance capital markets / investment experts from the Center for Financial Inclusion at ACCION International, EDA Rural Systems, and the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA). The courses were directed towards MFI senior management and board members and discussed strategies for attracting commercial capital and outside investors.  


Who attended?

In attendance were general managers, directors of finance, and key board members of medium sized MFIs that are beginning to attract commercial capital and which do not yet have outside investors.

  • Business plans for the investor: What constitutes a good plan? Where do MFIs often go wrong?
  • Selecting the right investors for your MFI
  • The critical role of governance
  • Understanding the expectations of and building relationships with funders & potential investors
  • Negotiating the term sheet: Hands on practice and role play
  • Making good choices in shareholding structure
  • Valuation: An interactive approach to theory of valuation and valuation methodologies
  • Closing deals and exit strategies

Course fees included all training materials, refreshments, lunches, and training certificate, plus one admission to Microfinance Cracking Capital Markets South Asia 2010 and accompanying Investment Marketplace in Delhi on June 23-24, 2010.
