Dr. Bansal leads the Smart Campaign’s work in South and Southeast Asia. A passion for equity and women’s issues, combined with an education in banking and finance, has led her to an extensive professional engagement with microfinance. Her seven years at the Center working on the Smart Campaign have only made her more passionate about financial inclusion and consumer protection. Hema manages Smart Campaign initiatives in eight countries, including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Philippines, Pakistan, Nepal and Laos. Serene by nature, she is baffled by her ability to live the frenzied life that work on the Campaign demands.
At Accion, Hema has worked on client protection assessments, training, social audits, CAMEL ratings, and due diligence and monitoring of Accion investments in India. Prior to Accion, Hema served as an associate lecturer and an independent consultant with the Department of Banking and Business Finance at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, India. As a consultant, she has worked with PlaNet Rating in India, FWWB, SEWA, and Tribal Projects for MFIs, among others. She has also worked on research projects involving rural banking, impact and microfinance, and is published in India and internationally. Hema holds a master’s and a doctorate in banking and business finance from the University of Baroda.
