Ms. Ledgerwood is a former banker and managing director with extensive experience in inclusive finance, gender equality, monitoring and results measurement and governance. She was the founding Director of Financial Sector Deepening Zambia (FSDZ), a market systems development programme to increase financial inclusion in Zambia. Prior to moving to Zambia in 2013, Joanna was based in Geneva (2006-2013) leading Access to Finance for the Aga Khan Foundation in Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, Uganda (2001-2006) facilitating increased access to financial services through strengthened legal and regulatory frameworks, and the Philippines (1999 to 2001) on a rural bank strengthening project. Since returning to Canada in 2017, Joanna has provided advisory services to leading development organizations and participated on various Boards and Committees (Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, the UK, Australia, and the US) focusing on supporting financial markets to be more inclusive and equitable. She currently Chairs the Centre for Financial Inclusion’s Advisory Council. She has written numerous papers, most recently on diagnosing and addressing gender norms, as well as three books published by the World Bank and endorsed by prominent leaders, including the Microfinance Handbook (1998), Transforming MFIs (2003) and The New Microfinance Handbook (2013) which provides a detailed guide to making financial markets work for the poor. Her latest book, Making Market Systems Work for the Poor (2020) explores the practicalities of implementing a market systems approach to alleviate poverty.
